Geneva Marriott Hotel, an experience of “Glocal” Hospitality
- 18 July 2022
With the recent opening of the first Marriott property in Geneva, Marriott International is successfully continuing on its path of creating new generation of hotels with a sustainable concept based on the highest standards.
THOUGHTFUL CONSTRUCTION & EQUIPMENT GEARED TOWARDS A HIGH ENERGY EFFICIENCY BUILDING
Conscious of the energy impact of heating and air conditioning, Geneva Marriott Hotel is committed to using the most innovative technologies to reduce its footprint.
- District heating system:
The district heating network is a system that produces heat from a central location using renewable energies such as waste heat. Underground pipes deliver hot water and heat to the hotel in a closed loop. The water is then returned to the plant to be reheated, creating a sustainable cycle
- Electrochromic Glass by Saint Gobain:
The electrochromic glass is an electronically tintable glass used for windows. The system, which can be directly controlled by the hotel guests, maximizes access to daylight and outdoor views and reduces the carbon footprint by optimizing solar energy and minimizing heat and glare. It allows to reduce the overall energy expenditure by an average of 20 percent and the peak energy demand by up to 26 percent.
- Air-conditioning / Geothermal energy:
From the genesis of the project, it has been reflected that the hotel could be located on a water table. Thus, the Group Chevalley, owner of the building, carried out drillings and discovered a source of running water. The energy is hence collected to cool the building and is then returned back to the earth without being polluted.
- Ventilated facade:
This element provides the building with a gap between its perimeter wall and the exterior cladding. Its primary purpose is to moderate the exchange of heat, air, and light that circulate between the interior and exterior of the building. The increase in temperature inside the cavity during the summer months generates a “chimney effect” that pushes the air upwards, thus reducing the wall’s temperature facing the inside of the building. In other words, it keeps the building cooler. During the cold winter months, the opening in the ventilated facade balances the wall’s temperature facing the interior of the building.
A STEADFAST FOCUS ON RESPONSIBLY SOURCED FOOD & BEVERAGES
Delicious but also good for the planet, the Geneva Marriott Hotel restaurant’s Moments gives pride of place to local products and eco-responsible cooking as well as recycling methods.
- A vibrant cocktail bar infused with home-grown ingredients
Ingredients grown in the hotel’s roof garden are used to concoct homemade syrups and fresh herb macerations, keeping indulgent choices wholly sustainable.
- A selection of local wines optimized thanks to long-lasting barrels
The bar team works with Bibarium. This company has developed a new type of barrel that allows wine to remain open for six months without changing its taste, structure or aromas. From the winemaker's vat to the glass, Bibarium preserves the quality of the product, significantly reduces its ecological impact and facilitates the process of serving.
- Reusing plastics for staff uniforms
The mixologists' outfits consist of an eco-responsible jacket made from marine polyester (plastics recovered from the oceans) and ecological fibers. This jacket recycles the equivalent of 9 plastic bottles per piece.
- A responsible culinary experience
Tasty and healthy cuisine, using responsibly sourced products, 95% sustainable and local. Dishes are carefully crafted with seasonal variations, depending on the produce of the hour. The aim of the hotel restaurant is to work as much as possible to km 0 for sustainable reasons. Moments is aligning itself towards the Label Geneve Region Terre Avenir (GRTA), working with local small producers to also have a significant impact on the local economic environment.
- Recycled, compostable and plantable paper for menus and bills
The menu of the restaurant and the bar – as well as the envelope for the bill, are printed on biodegradable eco-paper made with post-consumer and post-industrial paper waste that is embedded with seeds. The hotel guest can keep the paper and plant it in a pot of soil, the seeds grow and flourish, and the paper composts away.
All these measures implemented are to educate and encourage the clients towards new ways of consuming and living.
EASILY AVAILABLE OPTIONS FOR LOW CARBON EMISSIONS DAILY TRANSPORTATION
Geneva Marriott Hotel wants to facilitate the mobility of its guests - while always keeping in mind its commitment to sustainable practices. To this end, the hotel is equipped with a fleet of the latest generation of electric vehicles and promotes public transportation.
- An electric shuttle
A complimentary electric shuttle is available to hotel guests to move in a sustainable way.
- Electric vehicle charging points
14 electric recharging stations are available in the hotel parking.
- Free public transportation card
In partnership with Geneva Tourism, a public transportation card is offered to encourage guests to use trams as well as buses and boats to limit the impact on the environment during their visit.
- Initiatives for the team
A complimentary bike and scooter parking is available for associates.
AN AMBITIOUS AND HOLISTIC POLICY TO REDUCE OVERALL WASTE
To accelerate its initiatives in favor of sustainable development, the Geneva Marriott Hotel has also implemented a zero waste policy.
- No plastic policy
In order to avoid giving out plastic water bottles when guests arrive in their rooms, the hotel has worked on a stainless-steel water bottle designed with a representation of the Geneva skyline. Guests can help themselves directly from the water fountains available in the hotel's corridors. The little extra is that they can keep the water bottle as a souvenir after their trip.
- No paper policy
To reduce paper consumption and printing, TVs and dynamic screens are used throughout the building to share information with guests. Room directories and in-room dining menus are available from these screens.
- Waste sorting
Waste recycling containers have been installed by the municipality exclusively for the hotel
- In-room amenities
Three 360 ml containers of shampoo, conditioner and shower gel are placed in the bathrooms to avoid individual amenities with a high plastic consumption.
- Local partners
Partner vendors (such as the laundry, cleaning company, dry-cleaners…) have been sourced in close geographical proximity, to minimize unnecessary traffic and carbon footprint as well as support the local economy.
